Can I Deduct the Cost of an EV Charger Installation on My Taxes?

Whether you can deduct an EV charger installation depends on your tax situation, so ask a tax professional. Vortech is an electrical contractor and does not give tax advice. We can give you an itemized invoice, permit record and installation date to support whatever your preparer decides.

What records should I keep after installation?

Keep your itemized invoice, the permit and final inspection record, the charger receipt and the date it started working. These documents answer most questions a tax preparer will have about the project. Add the permit and inspection record, plus the date the charger was working, to complete the file.

Store them with your tax records for the year of installation. A folder on your computer or a labeled envelope works, as long as you can find the papers a year or more from now when someone asks.

Photos of the finished work and the charger model number can also help. They are not required for most purposes, but they are easy to take on the day and can save a search later.

Does it matter if the charger is for a home or a business?

It can. Business use, rental property and personal home use are treated differently for tax purposes, so tell your tax professional exactly how the charger is used. We cannot say how any treatment applies to you. Describe the use clearly to your preparer so the right rules get applied.

A home office, a rental property and a small business each raise different questions, and the answers depend on facts only you and your preparer know. The electrical work itself looks the same in every case.

Keep records that show how the charger is used if more than one purpose applies. If you need the invoice to name a location or a unit, tell us when you schedule and we will include it.

Rental property is a good example of why the details matter. A charger serving a tenant, a home office or a small business can be treated differently from one in a private garage, and only your preparer can say how. We simply document the install clearly.

What about the federal credit that ended?

The federal Section 30C credit ended for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026. Chargers placed in service on or before that date may still be claimable. Confirm the details with a tax professional. Your preparer can read the current rules and decide whether anything fits your return.

The placed in service date is the key fact. Your permit final date is a useful record of when the circuit was complete and the charger was ready to use.

If your charger was installed after that date, ask your preparer about anything else that might apply. Do not rely on us or on a website for that answer, since the rules are specific to your return.

Where can I find utility incentives instead?

APS and SRP have offered charger rebates and EV rate plans. Check current terms with your utility, since amounts, equipment rules and eligibility change from time to time. Programs, amounts and requirements change often, so confirm the current terms with APS or SRP before you buy or schedule the work.

Utility programs are separate from tax rules, so you can look into them regardless of your tax situation. Many involve a short application and proof of purchase or installation.

Ask whether the program requires a particular charger model or a licensed installer. If it does, tell us before the work starts, and we will keep the paperwork ready for your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Vortech tell me what to claim?

No, we are electricians and do not give tax advice. We provide documentation of the work performed, including the invoice and permit information. Your tax professional decides what applies to your return. Your preparer reads the rules, we supply the facts and the paperwork for your records.

Is the installation invoice itemized?

We provide a written quote and an invoice describing the work. If you need particular detail for your records, ask when you schedule the job and we will include what we can. We can include the address, date and charger details on request, so your preparer has what they need.

Do utility rebates affect my taxes?

We cannot say how rebates are treated on a return. Ask a tax professional, and keep any rebate paperwork from APS or SRP along with your installation invoice and permit record. Keep those papers in the same folder as the permit record and your invoice, in case the utility asks.
