What is the difference between J1772 and NACS?
J1772 is the standard Level 2 connector used by most non-Tesla electric vehicles, while NACS is the smaller connector Tesla developed and uses on its vehicles and chargers. The two plugs differ in shape, and adapters bridge them for compatibility.
Many newer vehicles from other makers have adopted or are adopting NACS, so you may see both. Which one you need depends on your car's port.
An adapter lets a vehicle with one port use a charger with the other plug. Use adapters approved by the vehicle maker.
Carry the adapter in a consistent spot, such as the glove box or a small bag in the trunk. Many drivers who rely on public J1772 stations run into trouble only when the adapter is left at home.
Does a J1772 adapter slow down Tesla charging?
A J1772 adapter does not slow charging on its own, since Level 2 speed is set by the charger amperage and the car's onboard charger. The cap is whichever of the two is lower. Check your model's rating label for the charger limit.
A 32 amp J1772 charger gives a Tesla the same practical rate as any 32 amp source your car accepts. A faster car can't draw more than the charger offers.
Heat and a loose adapter connection can cause trouble. Seat it firmly and stop if it gets unusually hot.
Some adapters are meant for Level 2 only, so do not assume one will work with a different charger type. Read the instructions that come with the one your car maker supplies or approves.
Can I install a J1772 charger at home for a Tesla?
Yes, you can install a J1772 charger at home and use an adapter with a Tesla. The electrical work is a dedicated 240 volt circuit with a properly sized breaker, installed by a licensed electrician with a permit and an inspection.
This is common in households that have a Tesla and another make, or that want features not offered by a Tesla unit. One J1772 charger can serve both cars.
Keep the adapter in the garage so it is always with the charger. Losing it is a surprisingly common annoyance.
If you use an adapter at home every day, check it now and then for scorch marks, loose pins or cracks. A worn adapter is a heat source, and replacing it costs far less than damage to the car or charger.
What should I check at public J1772 stations in Arizona?
At a public J1772 station, check that the station is working and Level 2, that your adapter is on hand, and that the charger fits your car's port position. Some stations are in lots that fill up, so check availability first.
Summer heat can make cables and adapters hot to handle. Park in shade when you can and let the plug cool.

A home charger takes most of the stress out of this. A dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician means you leave with a full battery each morning and use public stations only for trips.
